Abstract
We investigate how patterns of agricultural production historically shaped local economies and influenced the process of development in the Argentine Pampas. We compare historical and contemporary outcomes across counties and exploit exogenous variation in the composition of agriculture induced by climatic features, controlling for province fixed effects and an array of geo-climatic conditions. We find that locations specializing in ranching (i.e., cattle raising) historically had weaker linkages (both backward and forward) and a high land to labor ratio, implying low population density and high and concentration. Moreover, ranching attracted less European migrants. We then show that ranching specialization had significant negative effects on long-run levels of population density and income per capita.
