Roberto Álvarez es Director de la Escuela de Economía y Administración y Profesor Titular del Departamento de Economía.

Fue Director del Departamento de Economía entre 2013 y 2015. Además se ha desempeñado como consultor de la División de Competitividad e Innovación del Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID) y como economista Senior en la Gerencia de Investigación Económica y en la Gerencia de Estabilidad Financiera del Banco Central de Chile.

Sus principales áreas de investigación son temas vinculados al desarrollo económico: productividad, comercio internacional e innovación tecnológica, con énfasis particular en la economía chilena.

Álvarez es Ingeniero Comercial y Magíster en Economía de la Universidad de Chile, con Ph.D. en Administración, UCLA Anderson School of Management. Universidad de California Los Ángeles, y Master of Arts en Economía, Universidad de California Los Ángeles.
