Abstract

In this paper, we estimate a double selection model for a reduced sample of Chilean men who perform wage work. On the first stage, we estimate the probability of queuing for full-time wage work, while on the second stage, we estimate the probability of being chosen from the queue by employers. We find that the structure of the economy matters: bigger firms chose more workers from the queue, and the manufacturing sector selects more people from the queue than the service sector. Interactive terms between firm size and sector report that big, service-sector firms select less people from the queue, reversing firm size effects that are present in both the manufacturing and extractive sectors. We also report that years of schooling have a non-linear effect on being chosen from the queue: while primary and secondary education increase the probability of being chosen from the queue, tertiary education decreases the probability of obtaining a full time occupation.
