Esteban Puentes es Profesor Asociado del Departamento de Economía de la Universidad de Chile. 

Actualmente es Director Académico del Doctorado en Economía y del Magister en Economía. Se ha desempeñado como Director de la Escuela de Pregrado de Economía y Administración y como consultor para el Banco Mundial, Banco Interamericano del Desarrollo, Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo, entre otros. También fue académico invitado del Population Studies Center de la Universidad de Pensilvania, USA.
