Eduardo Engel is a Full Professor at the School of Economics and Business of the Universidad de Chile. He was a Full Professor of Economics at Yale University from 2001 to 2013. He is currently an Honorary Foreign Member of the American Economic Association, a Fellow of the Econometric Society, and a Fellow of the International Economic Association. He served as President of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic Association (LACEA).

His research interests include macroeconomics, infrastructure economics, public finance, corruption, and applied statistics. He was awarded the Frisch Medal by the Econometric Society in 2002 and the Carlos Díaz-Alejandro Prize by LACEA in 2026. He has also received multiple teaching awards, both at the Universidad de Chile and at Yale.

Professor Engel chaired the Presidential Advisory Council Against Conflicts of Interest, Influence Peddling, and Corruption — known as the Engel Commission — in 2015. The legislative agenda that followed the Council’s report led to reforms in the laws governing campaign and political party financing; conflicts of interest and asset disclosure; the High-Level Civil Service System (Sistema de Alta Dirección Pública); land use regulation; financial sector governance; and antitrust legislation.

Professor Engel holds a degree in Civil Engineering from the Universidad de Chile, a Ph.D. in Statistics from Stanford University, and a Ph.D. in Economics from MIT.
