Joseph Ramos is full professor at the School of Economics and Business and is professor emeritus of the Universidad de Chile.

His research areas include employment and wage policies, macroeconomics, and technological and development policies.

He arrived in Chile in 1968 as a Ford Foundation visiting professor at the Universidad de Chile. He then spent ten years as a senior economist at the ILO’s Employment Program for Latin America and the Caribbean, advising regional governments on employment and wage policies. He worked for 17 years at ECLAC, where he eventually served as director of the Division of Production, Productivity and Management.

He returned to the Universidad de Chile as a full-time professor starting in 1999. And was Dean from 2002-2006.

He is the author of eleven books and more than 50 articles. In 2015 he was named President of the newly founded Productivity Commission, where he remained till 2021. In 2020 he was chosen by his peers as Economist of the Year.
